Is AI Really Going to Build Your Business Website? (An Honest Answer from a Web Developer)

If you've been on the internet lately — and of course you have, you're reading this — you've probably seen the ads. AI will design your website. AI will write your content. AI will handle your SEO, your social media, and maybe your taxes while it's at it.

It's a lot. And if you're a small business owner trying to figure out what's actually worth your time and money, it can feel impossible to sort out what's real from what's hype.

I've been building websites professionally for over 20 years. I work with small and medium-sized businesses across New Jersey — plumbers, retailers, contractors, financial firms, health and wellness providers — and I have a front-row seat to how all of this is playing out in the real world.

Here's my honest take.

First: Some AI Tools Are Genuinely Useful

I don't want to be one of those people who dismisses everything new. Some AI-powered tools have made real things easier, and your business can benefit from them:

  • Google's AI Overviews are changing how people find local businesses. Making sure your website and Google Business Profile are structured to show up in those summaries is increasingly important — and it's something a good web developer can help you with.
  • AI writing assistants can help you draft a first version of a blog post or product description faster. You still need to edit it, add your specific details, and make it sound like a human wrote it — but as a starting point, they're useful.
  • Automated speed and image optimization tools have gotten very good, and they make a real difference in how fast your website loads (which directly impacts your Google rankings).

Now, Here's What I'd Push Back On

The AI website builders that promise a professional site in minutes are — and I want to be diplomatic here — mostly not built for small businesses that need to rank in search results and generate real leads.

Here's why:

They look the same. When you build with an AI tool, you're often getting a variation of a template that thousands of other businesses have also used. Google and your potential customers notice.

The SEO foundations are weak. A website isn't just pages with words on them. It's a technical structure that tells search engines what your business is, where you are, who you serve, and why you're trustworthy. Most AI builders don't handle this well.

They don't maintain themselves. Your website needs regular updates, security patches, performance monitoring, and content additions. "Set it and forget it" is a myth.

You often don't own your content. Many of these platforms keep your site on their servers, under their terms. If they change pricing or shut down, you can have a real problem on your hands.

What a Small Business Website Actually Needs in 2026

I've built over a thousand websites. Here's what I see working consistently for small businesses, regardless of what's trending:

  1. A fast, mobile-friendly site — Over 60% of searches happen on phones. If your site doesn't load quickly and display properly on mobile, you're losing business every day.
  2. A fully optimized Google Business Profile — This is free, and it's the highest-ROI thing most local businesses can do. Updated hours, photos, services, and regular posts make a significant difference in local search visibility.
  3. Clear, specific content — Pages and blog posts that answer the exact questions your customers are searching for. Not generic. Not keyword-stuffed. Real answers to real questions.
  4. Ongoing maintenance — Plugins updated, security monitored, performance checked. A website that was great two years ago can be underperforming today if no one has been looking after it.
  5. Consistent business information everywhere — Your name, address, and phone number need to match exactly across your website, Google, Yelp, Facebook, and every directory where your business appears. Inconsistencies confuse Google.

How Contento Interactive Group Can Help

At Contento Interactive Group, I help small and medium-sized businesses get their online presence working properly — without overselling them on things they don't need.

Here's what that looks like in practice:

Not sure if your current site is working? I offer a Website Audit for $149–$199. You get a plain-English report of what's helping, what's hurting, and what to fix first. No commitment required.

Need a new site? I build custom WordPress sites designed for your specific industry, with SEO built in from the ground up, starting at $1,200.

Want someone to handle it ongoing? My monthly Web Presence Plans start at $175/month and include managed hosting, security, updates, and maintenance.

Just confused about what you actually need? Book a 60-minute strategy session for $175 and let's talk through your situation honestly. I'll tell you exactly what I think — including if I think you don't need to spend more money.

I'm based in Bloomfield, NJ and I've been serving small businesses across New Jersey and beyond for over two decades. When you work with me, you work with me directly — no big agency handoffs, no surprise invoices, no tools pushed on you that you don't actually need.

The Bottom Line

AI is not going to make your website irrelevant. It's also not going to magically solve your online marketing challenges for $99 a month. The fundamentals still matter — maybe more than ever, now that AI is raising the bar for what "good" looks like online.

The businesses that win online in 2026 are the ones with a solid foundation, consistent attention, and a real human who knows what they're doing keeping an eye on things.

If you want to talk about what that looks like for your business, I'd love to hear from you.
